Health systems naturally integrate and many health systems and nursing home chains have acquired good long term care pharmacy service providers.  When that happens, LTC pharmacy can take on an enhanced role in the care of residents of skilled nursing homes, post acute patients and continuous care retirement communities. Patrick Cote sits at the top of one of those organizations as the Director of Pharmacy, Post Acute at Sanford Health. His perspectives on the care of older adults in the future is compelling and worth a listen.

It's President's Day! We're pulling from our archive and sharing a live episode from last season with all of ASCP's Presidents! Be sure to look out for a new episode next week.

Presidents of the United States are often referenced by their number and our next guest is ASCP President #12.  Having spent a career in pharmacy, mostly in long term care, Rolf Schrader is one of the best of us. A lifelong ASCP member, nearly as long as the association itself, Rolf lead operations at a strong independent LTC pharmacy and later in regional operations for Omnicare. Since retiring from Omnicare, he has volunteered at ASCP as Treasurer and for the ASCP Foundation.

By most estimates, 20 million more people over the age of 65 will exist in 2030 than exist today.  That's a 40-45% increase.  Long Term Care pharmacy has been around since the late 1960s and has been mastering caring for vulnerable older adults for over 5 decades. As those same people find themselves residing more and more at home and in the community, the pharmacies and pharmacists equipped to serve them need to be organized and activated.

Returning from a successful meeting, its notable that ASCP means family to so many of us. The chance to get together and reconnect, share stories and successes.  It is like our Thanksgiving. With this great American holiday upon us, we invite a dear friend of ASCP to share her story, her experience working with clients in the intellectual and developmentally disabled group homes.  People often without family. Sometimes abandoned. Nanette Wrobel is a pharmacist hero for many in this care setting and she embodies thanksgiving, even opening her Chicagoland home every year to people who can’t make it back to their homes. Join our sure to be animated discussion with Nanette.
